The redevelopment of the Conductor’s Building and the new development at 114 Mount Auburn Street has started this week in Harvard Square.
The developer plans to construct an eight-story 70,000 square foot building that will include restaurant, retail, and office space, and a new main building that will be owned by Harvard University.
The construction of the Conductor’s Building, which is 5,000 square feet, commenced with a ground-breaking ceremony with Governor Deval Patrick. The Boston Globe states, “The century-old Conductors Building is one of the oldest original structures of the MBTA’s Red Line. Development of the new structure involves a complex design in which the building cantilevers over and above the electric transformers that power the entire Red Line.”
Carpenter & Co. bought the property from Bulfinch Cos. for $4 million in 2012 and the developers bought the neighboring property from the MBTA in 2007.
